What happens to your phone when you upgrade to the latest model? Or the microwave once your new air fryer proves better in every way? They may still work, but the moment you decide to part with them, they become e-waste—short for waste electrical and electronic equipment, or ‘WEEE’. E-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream […]

Would you believe us if we said that e-waste could Would you believe us if we said that e-waste could become high-end jewellery, museum pieces, or even home décor?

💡 It’s true. South African artists like Ashley Heather and Maurice Mbikayi are turning old electronics into wearable art, furniture, and installations.

This kind of creative reuse gives e-waste a new type of value. It keeps electronics out of landfills and starts important conversations about consumption, tech, and sustainability – something statistics alone can’t always achieve.

Follow WEEE are SA to see how creativity can power a more circular future.

⚠️ Not sure when it’s time to let go? Swipe through to learn about 3 major red flags that indicate your battery needs to be recycled.

Every battery contains materials that can be recovered, but if they end up in your household waste, they are likely to end up in a landfill and become hazardous waste. Find your closest drop-off point or collector for proper battery disposal on our website.

We rely on batteries to power our tech, from phone We rely on batteries to power our tech, from phones and laptops to remotes and toys, but not all batteries are the same. Different types of batteries contain materials from lithium and cobalt to nickel and lead. Most of these metals can be reused if recovered, but can cause serious pollution if dumped incorrectly and released from leaking batteries.
Here’s a quick look at the basics of what’s going on inside your battery:
🔹 A cathode (+) and anode (–) create an electric flow
🔹 An electrolyte moves the charge between them
🔹 Metals (lithium, cobalt, nickel, or lead in older models) store and release the energy

♻️ Knowing what’s inside your batteries is just as important as knowing how to dispose of them safely and responsibly based on their unique chemical composition. Find your nearest recycling point on our website.

Since November 2021, South Africa’s Extended Pro Since November 2021, South Africa’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations have required manufacturers of electronic and electrical equipment to develop and fund systems for the take-back and recycling of their products at the end of their life cycle.

✅ Why does this matter?

Less e-waste generation and resulting pollution
More electronics to receive a new lease on life
More components recovered for reuse
More materials recovered & recycled
Safe disposal of hazardous components
