South Africa generated 530.000 tonnes of e-waste in 2022, with a recycling rate of 4,35%. We are the second-largest generator of e-waste in Africa after Egypt.

South Africa has banned e-waste from landfills, pushing for recycling. Yet, we still face challenges with proper disposal and recycling infrastructure.

Our story began in iLembe, a region in South Africa witnessing a rapid rise in e-waste. We saw the need for a local solution and emerged as an initiative focused on responsible e-waste management within iLembe communities.

But our vision always stretched across South Africa. While understanding local challenges was crucial, we knew the e-waste problem demanded a national response.

So, WEEE are iLembe took a giant leap forward, becoming WEEE are South Africa.
