WEEE Awareness

A core focus of WEEE are SA is the creation of awareness around correct WEEE management. A campaign was launched in 2023 (when WEEE are SA began as a local initiative, WEEE are iLembe), which aimed to generate broad awareness about the types of WEEE, the negative impacts of incorrect management, and how and where to recycle. This was done via sharing relevant information on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, as well as through activations such as on International E-Waste Day and the 2023 Ballito Pro surfing event.

An e-waste to art activation at the 2023 Ballito Pro, where local artists transformed e-waste into a standing wave to engage visitors.

Since in 2024, when ‘WEEE are iLembe’ transitioned into ‘WEEE are SA’, this awareness creation has continued, however, now at a national scale. Our aim is the same: to share information and knowledge to individuals, organisations and business about all things e-waste! This is critical to ensuring greater volumes of WEEE are recovered and diverted from landfills towards reuse, refurbishment and recycling activities.
