A study was done in 2022 to assess the policies and by-laws of the iLembe district and family of local municipalities, which found that e-waste is not sufficiently represented in local policies and by-laws.
A pilot project will be done in iLembe to assist the local government by drafting by-laws that relate specifically to e-waste, in line with relevant national legislation such as the ban of e-waste landfills and recent Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations.
A toolkit will be developed that can be shared with local governments throughout the rest of South Africa.
