By-Law Harmonisation

A study was done in 2022 to assess the policies and by-laws of the iLembe district and family of local municipalities to identify alignment with national e-waste legislation and regulations. The research found that e-waste is not sufficiently represented in local policies and by-laws.

The results of this research form a core component of the Municipal WEEE Compass project, which was subsequently launched in 2024 to provide guidance to municipalities around how to align local policies and by-laws with the national legislative framework, as well as how to release assets (i.e. e-waste) from municipal stockpiles and how to integrate WEEE management into the broader waste management system.
