About
WEEE are SA

A central platform dedicated to raising awareness about responsible consumption, reuse, recovery and recycling of e-waste in South Africa.

Our demand for electronics is growing, and more and more electronic devices and products are being placed into the market every year. Many people don’t know much about e-waste and how to correctly handle it, which can lead to it being stored or disposed of incorrectly and ending up in landfills.

To fix this problem, WEEE are SA aims to serve as a neutral and accessible hub for individuals, businesses, and institutions seeking comprehensive information, resources, and guidance on all things e-waste.

Our Goals, Vision, and Objectives

Our Goal

To educate communities, businesses, and government entities on the importance of embracing a holistic WEEE management solution.

  • This solution starts by exploring ways to reduce WEEE generation from the outset by rethinking our EEE consumption patterns and how we can make better choices.
  • Next, we need to understand how to explore all avenues to maintain functionality through reuse, repair and refurbishment, because that means we can hold on to our electronics for longer.
  • Only when all options to reduce and reuse our EEE are exploited do we have to do the next best thing, which is to ensure that WEEE gets recycled so that all materials (and the toxic constituents too) are safely removed and further treated.

By sharing knowledge about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle our EEE and WEEE, we aim to foster a sustainable environment and encourage economic growth through reduced consumption of raw materials, increased circulation of existing products, and increased recycling and beneficiation of e-waste in South Africa, resulting in a healthier and safer environment while creating new opportunities for small, medium, and micro-sized businesses (SMMEs).

Our Vision

To promote zero e-waste going to landfills in South Africa by creating awareness and promoting the practical application of the reduce, reuse, and recycle options for EEE and WEEE to improve environmental sustainability and create new economic opportunities.

Our Objectives

Our main objectives revolve around enhancing awareness and education on EEE and WEEE in South Africa. We believe that by sharing knowledge, information, and resources, we can facilitate and support awareness campaigns that promote sustainable practices and reduce the negative impact of WEEE on the environment.

Enhance national awareness and education around holistic WEEE management by collating and sharing knowledge, information, and resources to empower collective action in reducing, reusing, and recycling EEE and WEEE.

Support the awareness campaigns and related activities of key stakeholders, including the Government, Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) and recyclers.

Foster an environment that encourages rethinking our current EEE consumption patterns, opens our minds to alternatives to slow down the generation of WEEE, and encourages more widely distributed collection systems for WEEE across South Africa.

Ensure that the WEEE industry is sufficiently represented and capacitated as a key stakeholder to shape national and local policies and strategies.

Serve as a meeting point for government bodies, local businesses, PROs, families, academics, and the informal sector. WEEE are SA is a space where all voices can contribute to shaping the future of WEEE recycling, where no one is left behind, and where everyone has to play their part.
